Dental Implants

A dental implant is a small man-made root, usually made of titanium, which acts as the replacement of a missing tooth’s root. We can place dental implants on either the upper or lower arch. Titanium is often used to create your implant because its biocompatible properties make it a good candidate. When in place, the dental implant will fuse with the jawbone and create a solid foundation for replacement teeth. Dental implants are effective in replacing one or more missing teeth.

Why dental implants over dentures or bridges?

There are several reasons why Dr. Chhabra may recommend one or more dental implants, including, but not limited to:

  • When a tooth is missing, it can cause the jawbone to shrink, thus making your face look older. Implants can prevent this.
  • There are no parts to worry about misplacing. Dental implants are comfortable and stable, requiring no adjustments after placement. With the proper care, implants can last for a lifetime.
  • With traditional bridges, the adjacent teeth are typically ground down to act as anchors for the bridge. Dental implants can eliminate the need to remove unnecessary healthy tooth structure, which is always a good thing.

Are dental implants successful?

We use the most well known, successful, tried and tested implant systems that have been around for decades. Working with the best systems available in the market, we have a success rate of nearly 98% for our implants.

How much does implant dentistry cost?

This will depends on several factors, including how many teeth need to be replaced and how many dental implants are necessary to support your dental implant restoration. In addition, other procedures may be necessary before implant placement to ensure that you are prepared for the implant. During your implant consultation at our office Dr. Chhabra can give you a cost estimate for your implant treatment.

Who is a candidate for implants?

Anyone who is missing teeth, whether from decay, disease, or injury, could be a candidate for one or more dental implants. The most important factor is the amount of good quality bone available. Dr. Chhabra will help you discover if you are a candidate for dental implants during your visit at our office.

Is old age a problem?

Not necessarily. Health is more of a factor in the implant process than age. If you are in good enough health to have a tooth safely extracted, you are (in most cases) healthy enough to have a dental implant place. Certain diseases may complicate dental implant treatment and other treatment will be recommended in those cases. Dr. Chhabra can help you discover if you are a candidate for implant dentistry after evaluating your oral health and your medical/dental histories.

How will dental implants affect my life?

Dental implants and the implant restorations they support will feel, function, and look like your natural teeth. You will be able to eat and drink all of your favorite food and drinks. In addition, you’ll feel the confidence that only a complete and functional smile can bring to your life.

Will my new teeth look natural?

Yes! When dental implants are used with modern dentistry treatments (implant restorations), you will be amazed at the comfort, function, and appearance of your smile. When implants are complete, you may not be able to tell which teeth are natural and which are implants!

Will I be able to chew like normal?

Yes. After a brief adjustment period, you should be able to chew in the same capacity that you did with your natural teeth.

Is the treatment painful?

Some discomfort is not uncommon, just as with any surgery. Placement of one implant usually causes less discomfort than placement of several implants. We may recommend anesthesia and/or sedation to help you feel for more comfortable throughout the process. Your doctor can prescribe medication to ensure discomfort is alleviated. In addition, Dr. Chhabra can refer you to a previous implant patient so you can learn about his or her experiences.

How will I feel after the implant treatment is complete?

You may experience some swelling and/or bruising in the gums and soft tissues. Ordinary painkillers can usually take care of any discomfort you experience. Most people are able to go to work the next day.

How will I care for my dental implants?

You must care for your dental implants just as you would your natural teeth. Follow Dr. Chhabras’ brushing and flossing recommendations and visit the dentist at least once every six months to ensure you remain in optimal oral health.
